My colleague Vickie Morgado has taught me the wonders of coding!
Programming a computer has come a long way. Today, kids can begin learning as young as JK what it means to give sequential instructions to a computer and watch the results.
At St. Simon Stock elementary, we worked with all age groups using either Kodable (on iPads) or code.org (computer lab / desktops). What a thrill to watch students "program" and enjoy doing it!

I asked my daughter, grade 8, to create an Earth Day message using Scratch. This coding platform has advanced features and capabilities. Though she was given very quick instructions, Ivana was able to put something together in about 20 minutes that highlights some of the features like changing scenes and backgrounds, character look, and even recording of voice. I came up with a rubric that could be used by teachers for a basic assignment.
She got a Level 4! Probably since her father was grading :-)
